Laser stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. It is also called phototherapy and photo-biomodulation. Low-level laser is an emerging, non-invasive therapy in which cells and tissues are exposed to low levels of red and near-infrared light radiation (600-1070 nm) to stimulate healing.
Laser therapy involves using a highly coherent, focused light (photons) at specific frequencies. Light is readily absorbed in tissues by photoreceptors in the skin and specialized cells known as molecular chromophores, in particular the enzyme Cytochrome C oxidase, which acts within the respiratory chain in the mitochondria of cells. Cytochrome C oxidase enhances enzymatic activity in the cells, activates mitochondrial respiration, and dramatically increases cellular energy production (ATP), leading to a cascade of beneficial cell signaling pathways.
